A mercury switch, is a type of circuit switch that stores a small drop of mercury metal in a small container connected to the electrode. Most of the container is filled with an inert gas or a vacuum.

Using gravity, the mercury drop will move along the glass tube. If the electrodes are in contact at the same time, this closes the circuit and allows current to flow.

Note: Be careful when using the switch to prevent it from breaking; it should be handled carefully.

Quantity: 50 pieces

The tilt switch enclosed in a glass case is the most commonly used form.

When this switch is tilted at an operating angle, the two electrodes are connected by the liquid metal.

The advantage of the glass tube type tilt switch is that it can be observed from the outside, and the disadvantage is that it is easily broken if not handled carefully.

In order to prevent the glass-enclosed switch from breaking, they should be protected from outside elements.

Features:
Mercury glass type tilt switches are based on the movement of liquid metal enclosed in glass or metal shells to achieve switch on and off. Therefore, compared with mechanical switches, mercury switches have many characteristics:

  • Can be used in harsh environmental conditions. Because the switch is sealed, the internal contacts are isolated from the outside, so it can be used in an environment with oil, steam, dust and corrosive gases.
  • The external force required for continuity is small. Only one mercury can maintain liquidity at normal temperature. Its surface tension and specific gravity are both large. As long as a slight external force is applied to incline the switch, the mercury drop can move and the switch can be turned on and off.
  • Mercury has good conductivity, and the contact resistance between the electrodes is generally less than 100mΩ.
  • The current allowed by the switch depends on the electrode material. The maximum allowable current of the tungsten wire electrode is 10A, while the maximum allowable current of the general alloy wire is 1A.
  • Since the on-off of the switch is determined by the gravity of the mercury, it can work reliably for a long time.
  • The contact of the electrode is switched without any noise.
  • Because the mercury can flow, as long as the acceleration reaches above the set value, the switch will be turned on or off, so it can be used as a vibration sensitive element.
  • Small volume, various forms, and fully sealed devices.
  • Simple structure and low price.
